Breeding is Danziger’s heart, soul and core business

Danziger operates advanced propagation facilities in Israel, Guatemala, Kenya, and Colombia – ensuring a continuous supply of clean, high-quality vegetative propagation material to around 1,000 customers in over 60 countries. The company supplies propagation material, in the form of cuttings, plants and in-vitro, via a highly- efficient cold chain distribution networks. All Danziger products adhere to strict propagation and distribution standards, as well as environmental, fair trade and fair work practices.

Danziger’s Brand Manager, Michal Shafransky Fridman, says that breeding is the core business, heart, and soul of the company. As such, almost all of the plants and flowers included in their product offerings are of their own breeding. “Having said that, our promise to the market and end consumers is product innovation. Living up to our ‘Imagine More’ slogan we added selected genetics from industry partners to our assortment. One example would be ThinkPlants™ NA, a brand that represents a team of breeders and top suppliers: Danziger, Syngenta, UNEX, and Kapiteyn. ThinkPlants™  is a platform that can help smaller independent breeders to bring their new genetics onto the market. The companies combined offer a wide and innovative range of plant genetics. Based on a collaborative market approach, ThinkPlants™ has access to a very diversified perennial portfolio, the best possible technical resources, an organized retail pursuit, and a consistent, streamlined supply chain.”

Danziger Kenya and Danziger Guatemala

A good idea is only the start. With this in mind, Danziger opened its wholly owned Daziger Kenay farm in 2001, located 40 km North East of Lake Naivasha, Kenya and Danziger Guatemala in 2013.
Uri Kamara, the company’s Global Operations and Bedding Plant Production Manager says, “Our main goal when choosing a production area is the overall parameters which will bring fresh and consistent product to the consumer, therefore proximity to the market, climate, and available workforce are key factors to success.”

Sustainability

With climate being one of the key elements in plant production, the question arises how serious the threat of climate change is? “Danziger’s production sites are spread around the world,” says Kamara. He continues, “This makes the company more flexible when dealing with unexpected weather conditions. Global presence also means shorter shipping distances and being more market-driven. We see changes in consumer preferences with a rising demand for heat-tolerant plants such as our Portulaca series – PAZZAZ NANO™. Lantana is another crop we think has huge potential. Our Lantana GEM™ series, for example, thrives in hot weather.”

Climate change, carbon footprint obsession, and sustainability go hand in hand. Does Danziger think in the long run society will continue to accept overseas production involving cheap labour and polluting air freight? Shafransky Fridman: “Production facilities in developing countries are supplying stable workplaces and open a world of possibilities for talented people. No doubt that it is our mutual goal to have a less polluted world with all countries working to decrease it.”

Being a plant producer, Danziger believes it is contributing to sustainability as the company promotes the presence of plants and flowers in our environment. Shafransky Fridman: “The more people buy flowering products for their home, balcony or patio, the bigger the contribution to clean air and decreasing environmental pollution.”

Meanwhile, there’s consumer pressure to minimize crop protection products while herbicide options are diminishing. “We build our greenhouses in such a way that plants can be kept as clean as possible. We use insect-proof netting and work under a strict protocols to reduce the chance of pest and disease penetrating the growing areas. We disinfect all our tools and machinery to minimize spreading of bacterial infections, viruses, weeds, and unwanted pests. Adhering to these protocols helped us significantly reduce the need to spray. We forecast years ago this trend in the industry and ceased using certain kind of chemicals that are unfriendly to the environment long before their use was forbidden,” says Kamara.

He adds that the company reuses and recycles at every opportunity resulting lower transportation costs.

Quality

Asked about  the future of PGRs and the role of naturally dwarf cultivars ? “It has been one of our goals in breeding for the past few years to have a bestselling series that doesn’t need PGRs, like  CAPELLA™ Petunia and NANO™ Portulaca with small-footprints,” says Kamara.

Providing quality plants is easier said than done, he continues, “We constantly look into research and investigate growth problems to make sure we are constantly improving. We make sure all growing stages are separated to keep the plant material clean. We conduct lab tests regularly. The company has three labs – a diagnostic one – that checks all the plant materials, the R&D lab that works in cooperation with our production teams for constant improvement and the tissue culture lab that makes sure our stock is clean. These labs work together with dedicated software that enables us to constant supply clean material.”

Air freight

Air freight rates and capacity are currently a big problem. “This is one of the reasons we have our production facilities next to consumer markets. We have built Danziger Guatemala to be closer to the NA market, while Danziger Kenya serves the European and Asian markets.”

In cold chain operations the company constantly tests and examines the packing and freezing/overheating issues. Our partners handling the shipment are long-term associates and good communication helps us deal with problems. In addition we have customised packing and shipping to more complex destinations,” says Shafransky Fridman.

Consolidation in the industry means Danziger and others have to grow, to cooperate and to innovate. The company sees it as ‘a form of competition that makes them better’.

If robots and automated greenhouse production are the new face of horticulture, Danziger says it is ready for the future. “We are a customer-oriented company and as such we provide our customer with required standard of cutting whether to be used in ISO or AutoStix machines or any other specific request. In addition, our breeding programmes are designed to take into consideration the growing demand for consistent and uniform products and the use of automatization and robotization in the production process. For example, creating crops suitable for mechanical harvesting requires a breeding programme innovative enough to come up with a variety suitable for such harvesting”, concludes Shafransky Fridman.

Danziger Expands Rooted Cutting Stations Adding New Partners

The growing network offers Danziger’s top varieties as rooted cuttings.

Danziger is expanding its North American Rooted Cutting Station network, adding four more companies to the partnership. Devan Greenhouses, Ltd., Wenke/Sunbelt Young Plants Division, Plantpeddler, and Headstart nursery will now offer growers a uniform list of Danziger’s best-selling items in high-quality liners.

These companies join Green Circle Growers, Mast Young Plants, Hardystarts by Welby and TGS – Total Growth Solutions in the partnership. “All of these partners were chosen because of their commitment to quality customer service,” says Mike Fernandez, North American bedding market manager. “We recognize that our customers are looking for a way to source our products as rooted cuttings. We have hand-picked the must-have varieties and the best partners to deliver them. These partners streamline the process and make it easier for growers to access our top plants.”

All eight partners are accepting rooted cuttings orders for the 2018-2019 growing season now through the usual channels.

Danziger, a global leader in bedding plant and cut flower breeding and production, is committed to helping customers, along with the entire value chain, achieve success. The company’s product innovation is powered by one of the largest research and development departments in the industry. The team of more than 100 scientists, researchers, and professional breeders are based in Israel. Danziger’s state-of-the-art production site in Guatemala works under strict protocols to ensure the best quality plant material is available to the North American market.

Focal Scoop™ Fulfills Designers’ Needs

“Innovative breeding is our core value, and as such our breeding teams are in a constant effort not only to improve existing varieties but also to introduce new and innovative products”, says Daniel Kaufman of Danziger. At the IFTF he tells about their newest cut flower range Focal Scoop™.

Focal Scoop™ expands the market for Scoop® Scabiosa, as it brings an additional option to use it.

Three years after launching the highly demanded Scoop® series, Danziger is introducing Focal Scoop™. Compared to the original Scoop® series, the flower of the Focal Scoop™ is almost double the size, 8-10 cm. It is available in eight colors. “It was exposed for the first time at the Expo Flor Ecuador exhibition. The Focal Scoop™ is an additional series, which is aimed to answer an unmet need of a Scoop® that can stand as a focal. Whether as a consumer bunch or as a focal flower, we heard from designers, that they wished they had this possibility as well, for different kinds of designs, and with the new varieties of Focal Scoop™ we can fulfill their needs.”

Florsani
According to Daniel, the Focal Scoop™ will be available in commercial quantities during 2019. However, an attentive visitor of the IFTF will have spotted it at the stand of Ecuadorian grower Florsani. This year they started several trials to find out which ones grow best in their local conditions.

“In Ecuador we have the perfect conditions for growing the Focal Scoop™”, says Belén García of Florsani. “It has a beautiful large head size and a long stem.” Florsani supplies to the Netherlands, United States, China, and Australia. “Focal Scoop™ is suitable for all our markets. First of all, it is a hard flower, so it won’t be harmed during transport. Secondly: the Scabiosa is on trend, many florists use them in bouquets. Due to the colors, they can be used all year round.”

Internode cuttings are more suited for the modern grower

Apical cuttings are the conventional practice in the floriculture industry; this is due to the fact that apical cuttings are younger than internode cuttings, which increase apical cuttings uniformity in rooting and growth rate as well as increased success rates.
Internode cuttings are more resistant to environmental conditions and therefore tend to have increased transportation stability. In addition, they’ve shown increased value to customers all through the value chain; facilitated work with rooting machinery, higher cuttings production per growing area, reduce pinching work time.
In order to combine the advantages of the latter with the high standards of uniformity and success rates of apical cuttings, extensive greenhouse experiments were conducted.
These experiments showed that for a wide range of crops internode cuttings can be used showing all advantages of lower node cuttings without harming uniformity and success rates as was hypothesized in the past.

Background:
The ornamental plant industry is very diverse and includes the production of floral crops such as cut flowers and cut foliage, flower bulbs, flowering pots as well as foliage plants and bedding plants. Global floral production value is estimated at USD 55bn. Floricultural includes -mother stock plant material of various forms such as tissue culture, cuttings, and seeds. Mother stock material, bred and produced by the horticultural companies is then sold to nurseries or growers who in turn sell the final product, – flowering pots, to retailers.

Globalization of the floriculture market in the last years arise new product requirements. Both, mother stock materials as well as final products are exposed to extreme conditions during long and distant shipments. In some cases plant material is transferred through more than 30 °C from origin to destination. Despite the rough conditions, final products are committed to increase standards of quality and uniformity in this developing industry.

Parental material such as seeds used in many agricultural sectors is very resistant to environmental conditions and allows great rooting and growth uniformity when primed. In floricultural plants, many varieties are propagated using cuttings, mainly apical cuttings. Cuttings of some varieties, especially those with non-woody stems are very sensitive to environmental conditions during transportation.

Uniformity is a very important character in the industry which allows standardization and automation of processes.

In addition, in the last years, there was an acceleration of automation in the floriculture industry in order to optimize and standardize production process. Robots are available for most stages of the process from rooting to packaging of final products.

Internode cuttings have some commonly known advantages through the value chain:
1. Transportation- these cuttings increased lignification thus improving stability of the cutting during transportation.

  1. Rooting-increased lignification facilitates application of the cuttings by rooting machinery
  2. Rooting stations – Produce more cuttings per growing area. Since both types of cuttings can be used by growers without jeopardizing uniformity and quality of the cuttings. This can double the number of cuttings produced per growing area.
  3. Growers- Save time and workforce on pinching. Internode cuttings are necessarily pinched cuttings. In this way, there is no need for pinching of the cuttings.

Results:

We compared the two types of cuttings in various crops for a wide range of properties.

We were able to show that the potential of internode cuttings was higher for the examined crops (See table 1 and figure 1). The following crops showed increased potential when planting secondary cuttings: Fuchsia (X3.1 compared to apical cuttings-See figure 2A), Gomphrena (X3.1 compared to apical cuttings-See figure 2B), Cuphea (X2.4 compared to apical cuttings-See figure 2C), Lobularia (X2 compared to apical cuttings-See figure 2D), Torenia (X2 compared to apical cuttings-See figure 2E), Nemesia (X1.6 compared to apical cuttings-See figure 2F), Verbena (X1.2 compared to apical cuttings-See figure 2G), Iberis (X1.2 compared to apical cuttings-See figure 2H). For Lobularia, Torenia, and Gomphrena this increased potential was also characterized by longer and more branched roots (See figure 3).

Starters originating from internode cuttings showed an increased growth rate compared to apical cuttings following their transplanting (See figure 4). This allowed internode cuttings to fill pots in a shorter period.
A shipment simulation was conducted to assess the susceptibility of different cuttings to shipping conditions. We were able to show, as we’d hypothesized, internode cuttings are less susceptible to shipping conditions resulting in lower losses of cuttings during shipment (See figure 5).

Table 1: Starting time of potential is earlier and the total potential is higher for pinched cuttings

Three apical or secondary cuttings from the designated crops were planted. Potential was assessed once a week for each plant. Measurement was conducted for 9 weeks. Average weekly potential for each of the cuttings types of each crop is presented. Ratios are calculated as the potential of internode cuttings divided by the potential of apical cuttings.

Figure 1: Total Potential of internode cuttings is higher compared to apical cuttings
Three apical or internode cuttings from a variety of each of the crops were planted. The potential was assessed once a week for each plant. Measurement was conducted for 9 weeks. Total average potential of 9 weeks for each of the cuttings types and crops is presented.

Figure 2: Internode cuttings potential starts earlier and shows increased quantities per week compared to apical cuttings
Three apical or internode cuttings from the designated crops were planted. Potential was assessed once a week for each plant. Measurement was conducted for 9 weeks. Average weekly potential for each of the cuttings types of each crop is presented.

Figure 3: Internode cuttings’ rooting is enhanced compared to apical cuttings
Three apical or secondary cuttings from the designated crops were planted. Representing pictures of the roots one and two weeks after planting of the cuttings are presented.

Figure 4: Starters originating from internode cuttings exhibit an increased growth rate
Three starters from either apical or internode cuttings were transplanted in pots. Representing plants were photographed in the designated times after plantings. Spread of the cuttings in the pot is compared.

Figure 5: Secondary cuttings showed increased susceptibility to shipment conditions in most – crops.
3 bags of 100 apical or secondary cuttings of the different crops were packed in a box. Cuttings went through the following treatment:

Following 72h, boxes were opened and damaged cuttings were counted. Damaged cuttings of each type were calculated as the mean number of damaged cuttings. Percent of damaged cuttings was calculated from the full quantity started the simulation.

Conclusions:
Internode cuttings are known to have advantages compared to apical cuttings all through the value chain. The main reason internode cuttings are not widely used in the floricultural sector is the hypothesis those will have decreased and less consistent rooting and growing abilities making them unprofitable for use in the industry. In our results we were able to show that for some crops internode cuttings have preferred commercial properties compared to apical cuttings such as increased and earlier potential, extended roots and higher growing rates of starters making. Together with the time saved on pinching of the cuttings and the higher suitability of the cuttings to rooting machinery, internode cuttings of those crops are more profitable to all players through the value chain: cutting suppliers, cutting growers.
Internode cuttings also showed less susceptibility to varying temperatures which simulates shipping conditions it is important to note the results described in this article are preliminary results. The method should be assessed further by the different players in the value chain in order to further establish its advantages.

Sunstrong Erysimum cover story in GreenProfit

Sunstrong™ Erysimum linifolium- an early flowering perennial that blooms all summer -was the result of Danziger’s breeding goals to develop plants that provide more color, more blooms, and more solutions for growers and consumers. ” We can’t deliver a cold treatment in Israel, so we are selecting varieties that will flower without it,” explains Mike Fernandez, Danziger North American market manager. That’s why the Sunstrong™ series does NOT require vernalization; It delivers flowers in the first year without a cooling period. It finishes faster and is ready earlier for growers. On the retail side, because its an early and long bloomer, Sunstrong™ looks great on the retail shelf for a longer period of time. Sunstrong™ Bicolor Purple features large, lavender blooms, while Sunstrong™ Orange offers tangerine-hued flowers with a delicate, fresh scent. Sunstrong™ also shows exceptional heat tolerance, which can increase a home gardener’s success.

Sunstrong Erysimum cover story in Grower talks/by Mike Fernandez

Consumers are looking for easy-to-grow perennials that provide blooms all summer long. Sunstrong™ Erysimum truly delivers on the promise to flower early and throughout the season. In fact, Sunstrong™ is set to change the Erysimum category. In the past, Erysimum was seen only as spring bloomers. Now Sunstrong™ provides blooms all summer long, even in the southern U.S. One of the key differences in Sunstrong’s production is that there’s no cooling needed. Developed in Danziger’s facilities in Israel, Sunstrong™ delivers first year flowering without a cooling period. This gives growers the advantage to grow these perennials in a warm greenhouse, extending the season on either end. The days of reserving spays and moving product during production are over. Sunstrong™ finishes faster and is ready earlier. At Danziger’s facilities in Israel, the weather makes it impossible to provide a cooling period for any perennials. Because of these growing conditions, Sunstrong™, along with the Solanna™ Coreopsis and Lucille™ Leucanthemum series, can all be grown in a warm greenhouse. These varieties offer growers options and flexibility. Even though they don’t need vernalization, they can be produced with a cooling period. Several growers are having great success in traditional perennial growing programs.

Both varieties in the Sunstrong™ series shows exceptional heat tolerance. Sunstrong™ Bicolor Purple features large, lavender blooms. Sunstrong™ Orange offers tangerine-hued flowers with a delicate, fresh scent. A great thriller plant in large containers and stunning in the landscape. Sunstrong™ grows to 14 in. in height.

Additional production tips for Sunstrong™ Erysimum

  • Pot size: Quarts or gallons
  • pH: Maintain potting mix pH at 6 to 6.5 throughout production.

Amongst the Butterflies by Jimmy Englund

Photography by Joakim Anrell @stilfloristerna
I love a challenge and when the editor contacted me and asked if I would like to work with some Gypsophila I immediately said “Yes!” She explained about this great grower who would like to see what I could do with their flowers but, the truth is, it was never really a challenge! It was more something I’ve always wanted to do – so here is the result and I hope that you love it as much as I do.
I used:
Gypsophila ‘Cosmic’ – supplied by Danziger
Cymbidium ‘Hyzenthly’
Fritillaria persica
Floral tape
Steel wire
Décor wire – pink
Cardboard
Butterflies (artificial)
Organza ribbon
OASIS
® Lady 1 bouquet holder
Pearl headed pins
Glue

Begin by cutting a circle of cardboard with a central hole that is just large enough to fit the handle of the OASIS® Lady 1 bouquet holder through it. Next cover the cardboard with the organza ribbon and glue in position. Fit the bouquet holder in place through the hole and then, on the underside, neatly insert the pearl headed pins in a circle next to the handle. Cut the Gypsophila to length and insert into the holder around the outer edge so that it conceals the cardboard ring leaving a gap at the lowest point. Graduate the stems of the Gypsophila upwards to create a nice, rounded base. Create the central trail by binding lengths of the flowers onto the steel wire using décor wire to secure. Once you have the desired length for your trail, insert the steel wire end into the holder and hook the end over the frame. Infill with more Gypsophila to graduate the shape – see photographs.  Insert the stub wire into single heads of the Orchids, cover in floral tape and insert into the bouquet as desired to create a line, building to a fuller design in the center. Use this same technique to insert the Fritillaria. Finally, add the little butterflies to give a real feeling of summer ensuring that the chosen color is in harmony with the flowers and that you have worked them through the length of the bouquet. Finish by covering the handle in ribbon. I loved the editors challenge – I can’t wait for the next one because I really enjoyed working with the Gypsophila!

2018 remembered as the Summer of Love in the garden/By Norman Winter

No doubt 2018 will go down as the Summer of Love in the garden. Oh, it’s not like the “Summer of ’42” or the Greek romance “Summer Lovers,” but it’s the year petunias started giving us that loving feeling.

To be exact, the trend probably started a little earlier, but it hit the market with the proverbial crescendo this year. If you haven’t guessed it yet, I am talking petunias with hearts.

When I first saw Proven Winner’s Surfinia Heartbeat, I was simply amazed. I thought to myself, how did they get a white petunia with pink hearts? I also thought it the ultimate Valentine’s gift.

Heartbeat is not any old petunia; it is a Surfinia, reaching 12 inches tall and spreading 16 inches. It is perfect for basket or container mono-culture or combined in mixed containers like you would a petunia with a stripe or a blast.

The hearts kept coming, however, with Lovie Dovie. This is also a Proven Winners plant, but in this case, it is a Supertunia. They call it a pink and white stripe, but you will see white hearts all summer.

The pink is rich and vibrant, showcasing the white heart, and they have bloomed all summer in Columbus.

Lovie Dovie will reach 12 inches tall with that vigorous spread of 24-plus inches to which you are accustomed to Supertunias. In Columbus, they were partnered in hanging baskets with mandevillas and mixed containers with Golden Delicious pineapple sage.

The most riveting in color, however, may come from Amore Queen of Hearts from Danziger, a company in Israel. There is actually an Amore series of different colors, but the Queen of Hearts is simply breathtaking.

The hearts in this petunia are a deep crimson red against a backdrop of cream. The petunias have held up superbly through a long, hot, humid summer, reaching 12 inches tall and a spread of 12 to 24 inches.

These petunias will give you their hearts if you select a site in full sun.

As good as these new petunias are, don’t expect wonderful success without proper bed preparation. Take the time to work in 3 to 4 inches of organic matter and till to a depth of about 8 inches.

As you do this, add about 2 pounds of a slow-release fertilizer per 100 square feet. I prefer a 12-6-6 formula with minor nutrients, but that’s just me.

The petunias will never know the difference if it’s something close or balanced but do use a slow-release form of nitrogen. It’s a good idea to give them a light application of fertilizer about once a month during the growing season.

More than likely, you’ll be growing these in baskets or mixed planters. These will need to be fed regularly because as you apply water frequently, each dose leaches out nutrients. I like to use a diluted, water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks.

You will really be amazed to see the new shoots that will initiate if you maintain your fertilization program.

Don’t be afraid to cut your petunias back. You will often find that cutting back and adding a little fertilizer helps them survive August and look wonderful through the fall.

These new petunias are so packed with flowers that they definitely can dazzle all on their own. On the other hand, there are an almost limitless number of companions to consider, including solid colors of petunias.

New Perennial Standouts/By Jasmina Dolce-gpn

The perennial category continues to gain interest at the consumer level. Homeowners seem to want more “permanent” landscape fixtures. They also want low maintenance and season-long color.

Vaughn Fletcher, a monthly contributor in GPN magazine, visited the spring premier trial at Costa Farms in Miami. He evaluated both annual and perennial introductions for 2019. And in last month’s GPN, he shared some of his insights on the top-performing new perennial varieties.

He says these new perennials “produced dramatic, eye-catching flower presentations.”

If you’re looking to expand your perennial offering, look no further. Here are some trialed performers that demonstrated superior performance, along with commentary from Fletcher.

Leucanthemum Lucille Series
Danziger

This series consists of three varieties; Chic is pictured. All three have large white single flowers with a yellow eye and overlapping petals. Chic has a more compact habit, maturing at 14 to 16 inches. Vernalization is not required for this series. It is first-year flowering and hardy to Zone 4.

Danziger Chrysanthemum Open Days Experience the fun of choosing!

“Personalization is a necessity, especially in matured, well-developed markets” says Ori Danziger, Deputy CEO in Danziger.

Starting August 27 and up until the 31st, Danziger will host an “Open-Days” event at its site in Vereda Pontezuela, Antioquia. During this week, growers, buyers, designers and florists will be able to explore a myriad portfolio of chrysanthemums. The event will take place at the Danziger farm, which was established in 2014, set up as an R&D site, as well as an elite production site, to serve the local market.

This year, Danziger decided to add a new layer of context to its portfolio, not only by splitting all mums to “agronomical” segments (i.e. daisy, cushion etc.) but also to allow examining all varieties from the users’ point of view, or as they call it- persona.

“In order to be able to answer unfulfilled needs in the market, and to bring true innovation, we understand that we have to work outside of the box. Whether it’s on the retail level, bouquet company or even the end-consumer, there are different tendencies and tastes, and we want to address each and every one of them in the best possible way. This is why we created a new framework which is based on 3 main personas; the classic, the trendy and the naïve. Each represents a type of user, a unique style, and preferences. By observing the persona, not just the agronomical characteristics, we are able to screen our product pipeline from a different perspective and find other new solutions for the market’s special needs. This framework is facilitated on all levels, starting from our breeders, through our farm team, sales, and marketing, so that we all speak in the same language, and by starting this open-days event, we will also communicate it with our customers” says Ori.

During the Danziger event, visitors will be invited to explore the wide assortment of daisy, cushion, anemone or spider mums, under the new “persona” context, and according to Danziger, will help buyers appreciate the varieties on a deeper level. The display will be composed of best sellers, new introductions, and future candidates. For example, under the “classic” persona, you will be able to see ATLANTIS® which is Judith (also known as Doña Carlota), for the “trendy” persona, we have CUCHI™ which is Megan (also known as Carolina) and in the more “naïve” style, we present CRAZY LADIES™ which is Zoey (also known as Vickey).

“We are working in all areas to ensure best quality flowers. This is a combination of genetics, elite stock supply, and professional service and guidance we provide our customers.  For example, with ATLANTIS® which is by far the leading daisy mum in the market, we continuously challenge ourselves to improve clones, to educate growers and to support the whole eco-system to achieve high-quality flower at the finish point” says Anat Moshes, VP cut flowers sales at Danziger.

Sharing the Love: The Petunia AMORE™ Series

The distinct heart-shaped pattern on each petal of Danziger’s AMORE Series led the company to market the petunia as a way to share the love. Taking the approach that flowers have always been associated with love, Danziger has created a complete marketing program around that concept with this unique petunia series, complete with pots, signage, gift packaging, and even events in cities around the globe. Greenhouse Grower asked Liat Kaplan, Global Marketing Manager for Danziger about how the program was developed and its results.

GG: When was the first AMORE variety introduced, and which one was it?

LK: The first AMORE variety, Queen of Hearts, was introduced in 2016.

GG: What characteristics were you looking for in the breeding process? Were you actively working towards the heart-shaped pattern on the petals or was that a happy surprise?

LK: The petunia market is a very large and highly competitive commodity market. With many innovations and new varieties entering the petunia market every year, we asked ourselves, ‘How do you capture the hearts and imagination of flower growers, buyers and consumers alike?’ Flowers have always been associated with love. At Danziger we took this one step further through the development of a unique petunia series, characterized by distinct heart-shapes in each petal.”

GG: Obviously, a challenge for any breeder of petunias is to make new varieties stand out among the hundreds that already exist. At what point did you decide to add a special marketing program behind this particular series?

LK: The insight of ‘spreading love,’ not selling flowers, transformed the way we approached our branding and marketing. We began with the name: AMORE™ — a universally understood word for love. We created a 360-degree marketing and branding concept around the emotional question: ‘Are you ready to share your love?’

As part of the total concept, we branded our pots with hearts and the tagline: Share your love. In addition, created shelf visibility for the AMORE™ concept through branded tags, branded pot markers and POS materials. Then we took it farther, creating a teaser video ahead of Flower Trials in Europe. The short film, shot in Leiden, Holland, shows different people receiving a hand-delivered package of love containing an AMORE™ potted plant. Then, we designed our Flower Trials display in the style of Paris, the city of love. An additional marketing campaign, “Share your love in the cities,” helped us extend the end-consumer base for the AMORE™ series by targeting organizational buyers such as parks and municipalities. For this new campaign, Danziger teamed up with Florensis to plant the AMORE™ series in a variety of romantic locations in city parks. The first “share your love” event was held at Vondell Park Amsterdam, featuring live music, special romantic activities and branded AMORE™ giveaways. Our partners around the world liked the idea, and now it is expanding to so many different and exciting locations. It was even adopted in Brazil!

AMORE™ also has its own dedicated webpage, http://danzigeronline.com/cmp/amore/, providing clients and customers with a centralized place to find everything they need regarding the brand, from product information to photos of AMORE™ events and a range of branded marketing materials.”

GG: What effect has the marketing program and slogan “Spreading love, not selling flowers” had on sales? Has it made a difference?

LK: The market loved the story, and we registered unprecedented sales from a single petunia series, and a tremendous growth in our total petunia sales. While next season is going to be the second year for the European market, the U.S. market is only now embracing this concept, and we believe that in the next season we are going to see a lot of AMORE™ in this market as well.

GG: The AMORE series comes with branded tags, pots and other POS materials. How have these been received by growers and the public?

LK: To be honest, when we signed the contract with the pot’s supplier, we were a bit anxious about the risk we took, ordering such a big quantity. We were so happy to hear, even before the season ended, that everything was ordered by the growers, and they were actually producing more. The reaction to this branding is amazing. We see retailers and end-consumers touched by the message, and ‘drawn’ to the plant. Throughout the season we have created more and more marketing materials, from extraordinary gift bags that were given as a giveaway by Florensis, to unique tags that can be used as a personal note as well, to be attached when giving as a present. We see the high engagement this concept brings, and it challenges us to continue surprising, adding more innovative marketing tools for next season. We cannot reveal all at this stage, but we are taking it to the next level, connecting the plant and the concept to the relevant occasional-based marketing in the industry.

Many growers bought the branded pots, which assisted them to increase interest and sales among buyers. Retailers loved that they had a ready-made story for their end consumers that was compelling, relevant and highly visible in the store. By making the decision to stop selling petunias and start selling love in a pot, we transformed this commodity plant into a symbol of love — increasing sales and margins for our clients and spreading happiness in the process.

GG: AMORE petunias definitely have consumer appeal. But what characteristics will appeal to growers?

LK: AMORE petunias bloom from early spring until late autumn. They are low maintenance and easy growing, and are excellent for pots, baskets and mixed containers.

GG: Are there plans to keep expanding the collection? Anything you can share?

LK: Since the first AMORE variety, Queen of Hearts, debuted in 2016, the series has expanded to include Fiesta, Joy, and new for 2018, Purple. We see much potential in AMORE’s ability to spread the love.

GG: What other marketing ideas are in the works for this series that you can tell us about?

LK: With AMORE™, we created a powerful emotional marketing and branding concept along the entire value chain – from grower, to retailer and the end consumer. This is a concept that we will continue to invest in and develop further for years to come, spreading the love of petunias, and the love for humanity even further.

Our goal is to achieve even higher awareness and preference in the European market, but more importantly, to leverage it into a global success. The AMORE™ series, under the same concept, will be sold next season all around the world, from Holland to China, from Japan to the U.S. and all the way to Brazil. We will share our love globally.

Top Trend from Flower Trials 2018: Plants for the Urban Lifestyle

Compact size is not enough; plants need to make a statement

Flower Trials 2018 brought hundreds of visitors from different countries around the world, different disciplines and positions within our industry. The event is a great opportunity to learn more about the global markets most significant needs and trends.

One of the biggest trends this year was plants for urban lifestyles. “This year we saw a lot of interest in plants that appeal to the urban consumer,” says Ori Danziger, Deputy CEO in Danziger. “Space is limited in many urban settings, so growers and consumers are looking for plants that fit small patio or even a balcony containers. Creating the perfect plant for this use may be tougher than you might think.” Many times there are only two or three plants used in an urban setting. Sometimes, it’s just one, stand-alone pot. “We’ve found that the plant not only needs to be compact in size, it also has to have an impressing appearance,” add Danziger.

At their display, Danziger presented a showcase for plants relevant for urban living, expanding the potential of some of their varieties as an answer to this exact need. Plants were presented in various sizes and pots, in order to help the visitor envision the final use at the consumer patio. COLIBRI™ Calibrachoa, with its compact habit, was used to create small patio table pots. NANO™ Portulaca, which has a small habit but extra-large flowers, provided a great balance between size and vibrant color impact. GOLDEN EMPIRE™, a special variety of the TIMELESS™ Bidens collection, is a unique variety that is very well suited to the urban trend. Its tall habit and large flowers, make it a perfect sunny, stand-alone piece in a small container.

This trend is addressed by other breeders as well, such as Royal-Van-Zanten Showmakers® Aster for pots, which has vibrant colors and an impressive appearance.

One of the plants receiving a lot of attention from growers and retailers targeting urban consumers was CAPELLA™ Petunia. “CAPELLA™ is an excellent plant for people with small gardens, patios or balconies, because it starts small, and grows into a floriferous ball of color at the consumer level,” says Danziger. “CAPELLA™ Pink Lace, and CAPELLA™ Purple Veins, introduced only last year, are getting good feedback from growers and retailers. They tell us this variety is very compatible with the urban garden trend.”

Learn more about CAPELLA™ and the other Danziger varieties in the new 2018-2019 annuals catalog, available here. (http://danzigeronline.com/cmp/annuals-perennials/)

We think our Flower Trials visitors deserve nothing less than that at the show.”

“Our team goes from market to market, from Spain to Japan, from California to New York and Australia,” says Liat Kaplan, Global Marketing Manager at Danziger. “We see differences and similarities in flower tastes and styles all around the world. But, Gyp is one of the basic, internationally-loved flowers. It’s white, natural, wild and even somewhat “naïve” and this is why we see it is used across countries and religions.”

As the global leader of the Gyp market, Danziger began a ‘Gyp is Back’ campaign earlier this year. The company created an inspirational Gyp catalogue for the American market, showing the different uses of its wide assortment of Gyp, and in real-life bouquets sold in the USA mass market channels.

Bidens & Calibrachoa to take center stage in the Danziger 2018 Flower Trials display

Visitors to Danziger’s 2018 Flower Trials Display will find more retail solutions with a more international approach. The company will highlight its successful AMORE™ Petunia series, which is about to get further enhancement this upcoming season, uncovering significant retail potential. Danziger will also showcase two main products lines, the TIMELESS™ Bidens collection and a brand new, large flowered, compact habit Calibrachoa series, named LIA™.

The TIMELESS ™ Bidens collection offers a wide range of high-quality bidens, from the best of the traditional and classic varieties such as the Blazing Glory™, to strong colors, such as Pretty in Pink™. The collection is split into “types” of Bidens according to different uses and characteristics. The collection also features one outstanding variety; GOLDEN EMPIRE™. This unique variety has a tall plant structure and a different flower shape, uncommon in Bidens. “We nicknamed it – “Is this Bidens?!”- because this is the most frequent reaction we receive from customers when they see it. Golden Empire’s appearance is so unique and attractive that people sometimes think it is a different crop,” says Ori Danziger, Deputy CEO Danziger.

LIA™ is a new Calibrachoa series, composed of five colorful, compact varieties. With a larger plant habit than the COLIBRI™ series, LIA™ features extra-large flowers, tighter internodes and more flowers per plant. “We know that the market looks for various uses and sizes, and this series was created to fit perfectly into 12 cm. pots, as well as hanging baskets and small containers,” says Ori Danziger.  “LIA flowers early, creating a beautiful bench display, and continues to grow perfectly in the consumer’s garden or containers.

In Danzigers’ display, located at Royal Van-Zanten site in Holland, visitors will find a large and rich assortment of annuals for various growing conditions and market demands. The display, grown by Imperial Plants, will also feature an extended display of perennials.

The Gyp is Back

No matter how long ago you search, it seems like the Gyp (Gypsophila, A.K.A “Baby’s-breath”) was always there.

Pure white, small and very natural looking, the Gyp is one of the most “basics” of the cut flowers industry, commonly used to accompany roses or to give the “angelic” look for a white, pasteli bouquet.

In 1997 Danziger, an advanced breeding and production company introduced a game-changing Gyp to the market. Danziger called it “MILLION STARS®”, as the small white flowers resembled little shining stars. For the first time in the global industry, a vegetative breeding of Gypsophila was available, and growers could ensure consistent high-quality production of this variety. This MILLION STARS® swept the market and was quickly adopted by many growers around the world; making is the best-selling Gyp worldwide.

Since then, a lot has changed, many new varieties were introduced, and market trends and tastes changed over and over. Danziger had expanded its portfolio dramatically, adding more crops and varieties to its assortment, such as the latest SCOOP™ Scabiosa. But the Gyp stayed the star for Danziger, and the company’s declares its mission to continue leading the Gyp global market, keeping a close connection with designers and end-users, and creating the varieties to fulfill their needs and dreams, in a way that would be beneficial for growers around the world.

Mega trends in fashion and style are now bringing Gyp to the center again. From back to basics, to “less is more”, natural styled bouquets and arrangements are getting more and more popular around the world. The Gyp today is more than an accent for a bouquet, and uses many times as the center of design, as seen in Gyp white wedding, or even in a higher demand for Gyp consumer bunches.

As such, the market for Gyp had developed significantly, and the phrase “Gyp is Gyp”, cannot hold anymore. Following many interviews and researches, Danziger is offering a wide portfolio of Gyp, from the extra-large flowers of XLENCE® to the naturally shinning MY WHITE COSMIC™, all to fulfill the growing demand for a higher diversification in Gyp, to enable designers to use this flower in more interesting and creative ways.

In 2018, Danziger once again is going to be taking a leading part in bringing the Gyp market to the next stage. With the slogan “Gyp is back”, Danziger presents new products, new language and a new usage campaign.

With the understanding of the end-users language, Danziger split its assortment into 3 different “families” – the XLENCE collection™, with varieties of large flowered Gyp, the MY COLOR collection™– with naturally colored Gyp-including MY PINK® and MY WHITE COSMIC™, and the MILLION collection™– with small flowered Gyp. Through this, growers can find the best variety in any collection to suit their growing conditions, thus supplying their customer needs, worldwide.

In 2018, motivated by the “retro” trends, Danziger introduced two new varieties of small flowers, under the MILLION collection™. MILLION STARS® II is an updated genetic version of the MILLION STARS®, with very similar appearance, but higher quality from the grower level to the consumer level. MILLION CLOUDS™ is the new additive to the family, and is a variety aimed to answer the global trend of “full” flowers (like cushion mums)- this Gyp has small but very full flowers and brings the new generation of small-flowered Gyp to the market.

As the leader of the global Gyp market, Danziger takes it on them to also teach the market, and encourage smart and creative use of this flower. For that, Danziger has partnered up with Bill and Kris Schaffer, from Schaffer designs, to create an inspirational- practical bouquet catalog- for Gyp.
The Gyp catalog, to be published in March 2018, will help end-users, from designers to product managers and buyers, to get the best out of their Gyp, using the right variety for the right design.

Danziger will promote this catalog in a large global campaign, and promises many more surprises to come.

More highlights from CAST 2018

Many varieties were on display at the California Spring Trials 2018. So, even if you visited the event, you could have missed some. For this reason, FloralDaily.com will present several highlights that were on display at the participating companies in the coming weeks. In this article, we highlight the varieties of Danziger, Varinova, Syngenta, Proven Winners and Benary+.

Headstart Nursery

At Headstart Nursery, Danziger and Varinova presented their varieties and novelties.
Kate Zvara of Danziger presenting their new Erysium Sunstrong Bicolor Purple, a new bicolor that does not require cooling, it holds color till the first freeze and it’s first year flowering so you can grow it as an annual.
On the left: Phloxstar Red is part of the new Phloxstar series that consists of three colors. It is a Phlox with a mounding habit that flowers all summer long. Many phloxstars are known for having trouble in rooting, but trials reveal that these root very well. According to Zvara it works great in quarts and 2.5 quarts. On the right: Lia is a new series of calibrachoa that is bred for baskets. The series has short internodes which means more flower power and better performance. The series currently consists of four colors and more will follow. Click here for the enlarged picture.

Danziger Launches International Gypsophila Wedding Challenge

Florist and designer works to be featured in a new inspirational catalog

Flowers are an inseparable part of weddings. Whether in a bridal bouquet, a corsage or aisle decoration, and flowers create the atmosphere of the event, adding liveliness and color. In correlation with the retro mega-trend, together with the appetite for a more natural, wild-style setting, Gypsophila is being used more and more in these occasions. As part of Danziger’s continuous emphasis on the global gyp market, the company is launching a new, innovative campaign called the International Gyp Wedding Challenge.

In the global campaign, Danziger is encouraging creative florists and wedding designers from all around the world to celebrate Gypsophila-inspired imagination and show off their creative talents.

The kickoff for the challenge will start with an open invitation for all florists and designers to submit their photos. The chosen experts, from different markets, will then receive flowers from Danziger’s global network of growers. They’ll use those flowers in actual weddings. Photos of the gyp-based arrangements will then be chosen to create a unique catalog.

“The world is becoming closer. Florists and designers are now much more exposed to inspiration beyond their boundaries,” adds Kaplan. “We think it is absolutely amazing.” This first-of-a-kind designer’s challenge will create a global inspirational catalog, showcasing the unique works of professional wedding designers and florists around the world.

As the global leader of the Gyp market, Danziger began the Gyp is Back campaign earlier this year.  The company created an inspirational Gyp catalog for the American market, showing the different uses of its wide assortment of Gyp, in real-life bouquets sold in the USA mass market channels. The catalog was prepared by Bill and Chris Shaffer, well-known American designers. The catalog is available on the Danziger website.

An inspirational wedding display for florists and designers will be launched on the 15th of May for two weeks at the Pyramide Floral shopping center in Naaldwijk, Netherlands.

The presentation that was created by the florist designer Astrid Van der Berg, presents a showcase of different styles and outcomes coming from using 3 types of gyp, obtaining different characteristics of flower and stem appearance. The MILLION CLOUDS™, small flowers gyp from the MILLION COLLECTION™ to be used to create a natural and wild style effect, the XLENCE® , large flowers gyp form the XLENCE COLLECTION™ for the classic and neat look, and MY WHITE COSMIC™, known for its dazzling white color, a part of the MY COLOR COLLECTION™ – for the hot and trendy “white wedding” concept.

Danziger Launches Inspirational Mother’s Day Floral Display in Naaldwijk, Netherlands

Florists and designers now have a new source of inspiration for Mother’s Day. Danziger, a global leader in cut flower and bedding plant breeding, is launching an inspirational display dedicated to Mother’s Day at the Pyramide Floral Shopping Center at Naaldwijk, Netherlands. The event takes place from 30.4-12.5

“Mother’s Day is one of the most significant flower holidays,” says Liat Kaplan, global marketing manager at Danziger. “For the consumer, there are so many gift-giving alternatives on this day – everything from chocolates to perfumes. It’s really up to us as floral professionals to be innovative, creating added value and excitement that will tilt the consumers towards flowers at point-of-purchase.”

The display will feature cut flower arrangements, created by floral designer, Astrid Van Der Berg, highlighting beautiful Danziger varieties. The goal is to spur creativity. “We planned the display to be an open canvas for florists and designers, to trigger their natural creativity and to give visitors a new range of ideas,” says Kaplan.

Unlike other flower holidays, Mother’s Day is not centralized around a certain flower or concept. In comparison to Valentine’s Day, a holiday that is dominated by roses and gyps, Mother’s Day is a free spirit holiday, allowing for more creativity and diversification. “If we want a consumer to feel that flowers are the best present to show love, we have to enable versatile and creative solutions. In our Mother’s day display, we chose to show different alternatives, each based around a different type of flower, to show the unique and personal directions a florist can take when designing,” adds Kaplan.

Visitors will see bouquets with Gypsophila XLENCE®, a large flower gyp that gives bouquets a luxurious appearance. The display also highlights the stunning Scabiosa SCOOP™ in colorful and trendy looking bouquets and the elegant Ornithogalum STAR™ that will last long after the holiday.

The Mothers’ Day display also features a special corner dedicated to versatile upgrader Craspedia PAINTBALL™, which is naturally yellow but can be tinted to any color. One of the focus products used is the PAINTBALL™ POP, unique for its impressive large head of 4 cm.

Danziger is encouraging visitors to go even further with innovative solutions, by incorporating annuals into the display. Side-by-side with the cut flower arrangements there is a special display of AMORE™ petunia. This gorgeous, easy-to-grow petunia is known for its special heart-shaped petals. The Mother’s Day packaging features special pots with designed tags, perfect for gift giving. These special AMORE™ packages are available for retailers.

Armitage Talks Favorites From Danziger and Proven Winners- Greenhouse Grower News

From annuals that look like they came out of a Dr. Seuss book to breeding marvels in perennials and shrubs, the visits to Danziger and Proven Winners at California Spring Trials were exciting, to be sure. Here are some of my favorites.

Erysimum (wall flower) ‘Sunstrong Bicolor Purple’

The wall flowers definitely have a place in the market, and the last five years or so has seen a major upswing in breeding interest: The Poems, the Winters, and the Sugar Rush series to name but a few. However, I am pleased to show off Danziger’s new wall flower as a better replacement for the Bowles Mauve type of wall flowers. The plants are robust and floriferous and bring lilac-purple back to the genus. I look forward to seeing this plant as more than a novelty item.

Acres of Buzz from Spring Trials

Day 5 … but things have not slowed down!

Danziger

Chris: Alas, we must move on from Proven Winners to Danziger, which always holds its trial at Headstart Nursery, directly behind Garlic World (home of garlic ice cream). A good selection of new additions here, but Ellen and I will each pick a favorite. For me, I like that Danziger is doing what several other trials are doing: simplifying their lines. Take their Noa Calibrachoa, for instance. Lots of varieties and subseries. Very confusing. So they’re going to eventually drop Noa as a series and instead upgrade everything and give them their own series name based on habit.

For instance, Lia is their hanging basket series. It features tight internodes and lots of flowers. Daylength is just 10 hours, so it’s easy to flower early. Lia starts with four colors.

Also getting a new addition is Colibri, their compact calibrachoa series. It’s been tested to produce a good-looking 4-in. pot, but still finish nicely in the garden. Lemon is the new one in this series. Okay, Ellen, your pick from Danziger?

Ellen: I’ll pick Sunstrong Bicolor Purple Erysimum. Fans will know we’ve run into Erysimum several years ago, but Danziger’s version needs no cooling at all. Grow it like an annual, we were told, put it in gallons or larger, and extend your season on either end. The color is an interesting pale purple and salmon or peach.

The Trials Trail

Greetings from California!

Team GPN is on Day 3 of our California Spring Trials adventure. We escaped the snowy weather in the Chicago area to head to the coast where we are working our way from northern part of the state down to central California over five days.

So far, Mother Nature has provided us with great weather. We’re just hoping she behaves herself for the rest of the week — but I’m not holding my breath.

We started bright and early on Saturday morning in San Juan Bautista where we visited Thompson & Morgan, Hem Genetics, Lambert, Vista Farms and Plant Source International who are exhibiting at Speedling.

Yesterday our day began in Gilroy at Kirigin Cellars winery where Proven Winners is exhibiting its new introductions including the new succulent line that was announced several weeks ago.

From there, we headed down the road to Syngenta Flowers to see what’s new including the newly acquired dahlia line from Verwer Dahlia BV and then to Danziger. Next, it was off to Salinas to see the latest offerings from Westhoff, PAC, Beekenkamp and Plug Connection

Jasmina Dolce, GPN’s managing editor, is chronicling some of the highlights of each day in GPN’s Culture Connection e-newsletter. If you are not receiving the Culture Connection, click here and sign up today. gpnmag.com/signup/.

Day 2 at the California Spring Trials

We packed a ton of visits in our Day 2 itinerary, starting in Gilroy. Our first stop was at Kirigin Cellars where Proven Winners showcased their new introductions. Aside from the beautiful annuals, perennials and shrubs, they debuted two totally new plant categories: Coral Creations succulent program and Proven Harvest edibles.

Next, we visited Syngenta Flowers where they had a totally new setup that welcomed guests through their outdoor garden where we got to enjoy snapdragons, pansies and more. Inside, we got a closer look at all the new varieties and displays.

We continued to Headstart Nursery to check out Danziger’s exhibit. They highlighted some of their best-selling items like bidens and lobularia and all the new introductions for 2019. They also added new combinations to their Mixis line. You may remember last year guests were able to vote for their favorite recipes. They tallied up the votes and officially introduced the most popular ones. Our pick (Morning Dew) made it!

Our final stop of the day was at Floricultura in Salinas, where we caught up with the folks at Westhoff, PAC, Beekenkamp and Plug Connection. Westhoff continues to expand on its popular lines Candy Shop and Chameleon calibrachoas. Beekenkamp is venturing into brand new plant classes, like petunias. And Plug Connection is introducing a new and impressive rose collection. It was a lot to take in but all very exciting!

It was a busy day, but here are some of the highlights:

Erysium ‘Sunstrong Bicolor Purple’
Danziger

This Zone 6 erysium requires no cooling and can be grown just like an annual. It will flower all through the summer and is recommended for larger containers.

Top annual picks for 2018

Last fall, several trial garden managers submitted information on their best-in-show annuals. Descriptions of all varieties were submitted by their respective trial garden managers.

Portulaca Pazzaz Nano (Danziger), Plantpeddler

This plant will tolerate just about any stress test you give it. Hot and dry to full wilt, it takes it all and stays in good color. It is a great portulaca series that will have open flowers earlier in the morning and will stay open later in the evening. If you need a plant in a hot, dry spot, this is the series to plant.

This new series from Danziger has large, brightly colored flowers that open early in the day. Nanos are more compact than the original Pazzaz series and can be finished with little to no PGR.

ForeCAST: Imagine more with Danziger

For the first time in Danziger’s CAST history, their trial garden will feature an area exclusively for retailers. This private space will include new and exclusive varieties, as well as retail displays with full-grown individual plants and container combinations. Here are some highlights:

This early series will flower in ten-hour days. Colibri is available in eight colors, including ‘lemon’, new for 2019.

The Vanessa series is bred for mildew tolerance and flower power. Danziger tests prospective varieties by inoculating the seedlings with mildew. Only those that stay clean and in full color are brought to market. Cascading varieties are wonderful for hanging baskets, uprights are perfect for pots.

The Solanna series is known for first-year flowering with no bulking or vernalization requirements. New for 2019, Solanna Bright Touch flowers exceptionally early, with blooms covering the plant as early as April. A good quart perennial, Solanna is best in gallons.

Chinese flower market is fast-forwarding towards rapid growth in volume and quality

The 2018 China International Floriculture & Horticulture Trade Fair in Guangzhou, China unveiled two market trends: growth potential and demand for high-quality products. “The Chinese market is really embracing high quality flowers”, says Micha Danziger, Danziger chairman of the board.

The Danziger booth at the flower expo exhibition featured a large display of both business lines Danziger is currently offering to the local market, cut flowers and bedding plants.

The exhibition attracted flower buyers and local growers from the Guangzhou and surrounding regions. “We met various high-scale importers from China, many visitors from neighboring countries like Malaysia, Korea, Hong Kong and many more,” said Danziger. “We had good traffic in the booth. Attendees are people who love flowers, appreciate quality and want to be part of the global flower industry.”

The display of cut flowers included a wide range of blooms, from the leading global varieties, to specialty varieties that suit the local taste and climate conditions. Chinese market trends focus on tinted colors, so the Danziger booth featured varieties in both “natural” colors, and tinted versions. This highlighted the flexibility for designers and florists. For example, XLENCE™, the leading large flowered Gyp in the world, is displayed in white, but also in many bright colors. The exceptionally large head Craspedia, PAINTBALL™ POP was also tinted to many vibrant colors, making the flowers look like sweet candies.

“At Danziger, we believe in creative collaboration,” says Micha Danziger. “There is so much potential in this market, so we asked our close partners from South America and Kenya to join us for this exhibition. By visiting our booth attendees were also able to meet with partners from Bellaflor group, Eternal flowers and Florisol from Ecuador, and Black Tulip from Kenya. I believe that working together will be a positive experience for all of us,” adds Danziger.

The bedding plant presentation featured a beautiful and tranquil simulation of a flowering porch. This photo location was the center of attention, highlighting stunning Danziger varieties such as, Salvia SALLYFUN™ Deep Ocean, Lobularia Purple STREAM™, Impatiens, SUN HARMONY™, Calibrachoa NOA™,

Danziger will also take part in IPM Hortiflorexpo Beijing 2018, taking place between the 10th – 12th of May.

Global Supply and Demand Changes Will Drive Cut Flower Industry Growth

Leading cut flower wholesalers, retailers and bouquet companies gathered in Miami, Florida last week to discuss the future of the cut flower industry. The private, 6-day event, hosted by Danziger focused on innovation and the end consumer. “The development of cut flowers consumption will be driven by global supply and demand changes,” says Gaby Danziger, Danziger CEO. “Companies along the value chain, from growers to wholesalers and retailers need to be open to the global mega-trends. The companies, who are agile to react and brave enough to try new crops and new varieties, will be the big winners of our industry over the next 10 years.”

The Innovation Session was led by the Danziger team, composed of sales and marketing professionals, from Israel, Colombia, and Ecuador. This team discussed the global perspective, insights and best practices currently taking place in the market. They also spurred discussion on future change.

“We see how the globalization of the industry pushes its development. The traditional link between “growing” markets and “consuming” markets is dissolving, and a new, complex matrix evolves,” says Gaby Danziger. “We understand that it’s our job as global breeders, to offer our customers and partners not only the best genetics and plant materials but also inspiration and tools, which will improve the quality of the value proposition throughout the chain.”

The presentation was a combination of mega-trends, best practices arising from developed markets such as the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and an introduction of new tools and inspirations. The team also launched a new, first-of-its-kind Gyp catalog. The catalog is designed to fit the tastes and norms of the United States focusing on seasonal needs and price points the U.S. market is looking for.

“We spend a lot of time and effort to be in direct communication with the “consumption” markets, in order to be in a position to have the best understanding of the market needs, and to be able to predict the future trends – especially the ones we need to answer with our products,” says Liat Kaplan, Danziger Global Marketing Manager. “By taking many “shop-safaries”, interviewing, and conducting opportunities for feedback, like this Innovation Session in Miami, we are able to share information, inspire people’s imagination, and take an active part in the development of our global industry.”

The innovation session was organised under the “consumer- experience” framework. This is a unique perspective for breeders who are the first link in the value chain, far away from the end-consumer. “Even though we do not sell to the end-consumer, everything we do, or not do, ends up there. So, whenever we think of which initiatives should be pursued, and which discarded, we have to bear the consumers in mind,” says Kaplan.

Danziger is planning more Innovation Sessions in the different markets the company serves.

SCOOP™ Scabiosa Offers More Texture, More Color, More Inspiration

Danziger event highlights designer creativity and flower series flexibility.

The global cut flower industry is demanding rich textures, multi-petals, extra layers, intense colors and ‘full appearance’ flowers. Danziger sees the increasing demand for cushion mums as a solution. To answer this need, the company introduced the SCOOP™ Scabiosa. This innovative and different cut flower variety has gradually expanded to a series.

“Taking a rather ‘old- forgotten’ crop, our breeders, using advanced breeding technologies, have brought it back to life,” says Anat Moshes, Vice President Cut Flowers Sales at Danziger. With more than eight colors and bi-color varieties, stronger stems and high productivity, the series has become very successful in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.

To highlight the versatility and beauty of this variety, Danziger hosted a special event at their facility in Israel, dedicated to the SCOOP™ series.  More than 25 flower designers were invited to an open workshop evening, where they could touch and feel the flowers. They also created free-style arrangements, using mainly SCOOP™.

“We knew SCOOP™ was gaining popularity as we started receiving more and more requests for sourcing options from wholesalers, importers, and retailers, across the United States and Europe,” says Liat Kaplan, Global Marketing Manager at Danziger. “We have collected numerous arrangements and real-life bouquets from different markets. Each with its own character, color palette, and style. But, the common theme was that, in many cases, designers used it the same way they use cushion mums,” Kaplan adds. “Florists told us they ‘fell in love’ with the unique appearance, and some even mentioned that it took them a while to connect the SCOOP™ with the Scabiosa flowers they knew in the past.”

During the event, dozens of different arrangements, large and small, classic and extravagant, and even flower-made jewelry were created and photographed. Danziger will be publishing an inspiration brochure based on this event.

“Personally, I am in love with this flower. It’s unique, different, full of color, and very versatile,” says Baruch Nutovitz, a top designer, who was the professional leader of this event. “You can actually use it in an arrangement at any stage – closed, open or even after all leaves have fallen. I travel a lot around the world to gather inspiration from different markets, and no doubt, the SCOOP™ answers the global trend of rich, cushion style flowers”

Portulaca Pazzaz NANO™ series- Greenhouse Product News

This blindingly compact collection boasts vibrant color on early-flowering plants.

The Portulaca Pazzaz NANO™ series from Danziger is the new, compact sub-series to the popular PAZZAZ™ series. It has been consistently ranked among the top-performing varieties in trials across the country. Pazzaz NANO™ has a compact and moderate habit with big beautiful flowers that offer strikingly bright color.

Pazzaz NANO™ stands apart from other Portulacas for its extremely controlled growth. It grows to approximately 8 inches tall, flowers very early and even keeps developing overnight.

Flowers open up very early in the morning, enabling a touch of color even with the morning coffee on the patio. And, they stay open, well into the day or evening.

AVAILABLE COLORS

This easy-growing, low-maintenance series includes four intense, vibrant colors for the summer garden. Orange features a semi-trailing compact habit and sizzling orange blooms. Semi-trailing and compact Fuchsia flowers early with beautiful blooms. Hot Pink offers pink-red, semi-trailing flowers on a compact plant. Yellow is the semi-Upright variety in the series, showing beautiful bright blooms still on a compact habit.

VERSATILITY

Extremely versatile, Pazzaz NANO™ fits the pot it’s in, so you can produce a larger pot or basket, but it’s also good for 4-inch pot or gallons.

NANO™ may be used for hanging baskets, combinations and even as a groundcover. Plants grow to approximately 8 inches high and spread to 12 inches wide. Plant it in full sun.

CULTURE

Danziger bred Pazzaz NANO™ for more controlled growth, to make it easier and more cost-effective. And also to help the environment.  With its compact controlled habit, Pazzaz NANO™ does not need plant growth regulators for successful production. This is something consumers and growers have been requesting, and an issue that will keep arising.

Pazzaz NANO™ is an easy-growing portulaca, requiring little special treatment. With that in mind, here are a few tips to help get the most out of your crop. Stick one cutting per cell’ using a well-draining commercial media. Maintain pH at approximately 5.8 to 6.0 during rooting. Electrical conductivity (EC) should be 0.8 in week one and increase to 0.90 in weeks two and three. By week four, plants will do well with EC in the range of 0.90 to 1.2. For weeks one and two, maintain daytime greenhouse temperatures at 72 to 74oF, and nighttime temperatures at 72 to 74oF. Drop temperatures at 65 to 72oF days and 68oF nights for the remainder of rooting through week four. Portulacas are day natural, so no supplemental lighting is needed. We suggest a preventative fungicide application with Daconil on the day of sticking and a second Deconil application in week two. Be sure to always follow label instructions.

By week five, plants will be ready for transplant- one plant per pot into quart pots. Constant feed with a balanced fertilizer containing 100- to 150-ppm of nitrogen, continuing for the remainder of production. Keep EC at 0.90 to 1.2, and pH should also be steady in the 5.8 to 6.0 range.

Later in production, consider a 1-ppm Bonzi drench if needed, but Pazzaz NANO™ was bred to stay compact with no plant growth regulators and it is unlikely that plants will need it.

Daytime temperature should stay in the range of 65 to 68o F, with night temperatures the same. Maintain a vigilant scouting and monitoring program to prevent any insect and disease activity. Maintain moderate humidity levels and good air circulation as a preventative. Plants will be ready for spring sale in approximately 14 weeks.

Done Deal: Easy Peasy Combos

Whenever we do the Pots, Baskets & Window boxes issue, I always like to have a feature taking a look at the mixed upright and hanging basket combos that can go in those containers. This time, we tapped some of the industry’s breeders and growers to tell us just how easy it can get filling those pots and baskets. If you’re the grower, too, that means less time choosing the right combos and more time counting your profits. The Rise of the GOLDEN EMPIRE™

Mishmar Hashiva, Israel – January 31, 2018, IPM Essen was a big success for Danziger. The global breeder presented a larger collection, inviting the visitors to explore their assortment of both bedding plants and cut flowers.

One outstanding product was the Golden Empire™, a member of Danziger’s TIMELESS™ Bidens collection.

“We decided to create a more focused display this year in Essen. Instead of having many different varieties on our display, we chose to exhibit only varieties from our TIMELESS™ collection and from our AMORE™ Petunia series. This turned out to be a smart decision” says Ayala Zilberman, Europe Sales Manager at Danziger.

TIMELESS™ is a rather new brand of Danziger’s Bidens, debuted at the 2017 Flower Trials.

“Our R&D has managed to create a large, diverse, unique and innovative assortment of Bidens. From top of the line best sellers, such as the Blazing Glory™ and Yellow Charm™ to new colors like the Pretty in Pink™, and unique varieties like the Golden Empire™. Danziger thus offers a “one stop shop” of Bidens, with all types and colors of Bidens, in one place. We called it our TIMELESS™ Collection, as we look at these varieties like a “family”, gathering all members from the more traditional to the “young and kicking” under the same umbrella of high quality Bidens brand” says Liat Kaplan, Global Marketing Manager.

“This exhibition was definitely very good for the Golden Empire™. People kept asking me “Is that Bidens?” and I was happy to answer- yes. This is actually one of my favorite Bidens varieties, as it so floriferous, regenerating flowers, and it has a tall, “royal” appearance, one cannot ignore” says Ayala.

Danziger will present the TIMELESS™ Collection again during the upcoming CAST event and at the 2018 Flower Trials.

Growing Tips for Bidens From a Plant Expert-Greenhouse Grower article

With bidens breeding and its development increasing exponentially in recent years, we’re seeing great advancements in the field. Along with that, I think we’ll see the crop become a major player in the market, beyond the niche crop it is now. New colors, forms, and habits are all contributing factors to the increasing popularity of this high-potential plant.

Even with the ramp up in breeding, producing bidens still takes attention to detail and a focus on quality. Here are a few of the tips we’ve developed over the years for perfecting and breeding bidens. (Visit the Danziger website to see bidens breeding.)

Production Recommendations For Growing Bidens Successfully

Rooting: Bidens varieties are easy to root. They typically take off within 10 to 14 days at temperatures of 64°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Consider a preventative drench with a fungicide such as Daconil after sticking trays.

Planting: For 4-inch pots, use one plant per pot. Plants will be ready for sales (from rooted cuttings) within six to eight weeks. For 6-inch (15 cm) pots, use one to two plants per pot, and they’ll be ready in about eight to 10 weeks. If you’re producing 10-inch (25 cm) hanging baskets, use three to four plants, and the baskets will be ready in 10 to 12 weeks.

Pinching: Bidens benefits from one soft pinch during planting, in about week three after sticking the liner.

Light Intensity: Bidens prefers full sunlight. Provide a minimum of 6,000 footcandles (60,000 LUX) of light.

Temperatures: Keep greenhouses relatively warm when growing bidens. Maintain daytime temperatures at 64°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C) and keep nighttime temperatures at 55°F to 65°F (13°C to 18°C).

Fertilizer: Provide a constant feed with a balanced fertilizer, at levels of 200 to 250 ppm nitrogen, containing average micronutrient levels.

Irrigation: Bidens benefits from constant moderate moisture. Excessive dryness can cause petal drop.

Growing Media: Choose a well-drained, disease-free potting mix. Maintain pH at 5.5 to 6.3 and electrical conductivity (EC) at 0.6 to 0.9.

Growth Regulators: Plant growth regulators (PGRs) can be considered optional for bidens. They are not necessary under high light intensities. If you decide to do a PGR application, consider one to three sprays of Alar (B-Nine) at approximately 2 gram/Liter according to required plant size. Always read and follow label instructions.

Pests and Diseases: An integrated program is essential to successful pest and disease management. Start with a standard preventive program. Throughout production, continue with a vigilant scouting and monitoring program to prevent any insect and disease activity. Maintain moderate humidity levels and good air circulation as a preventative. In particular, scout and monitor for insects, including whiteflies, aphids, and thrips, and plan for preventative sprays. Diseases to watch for include botrytis and pythium. Drench with broad-spectrum fungicides as a preventative measure.

USDA Hardiness: Most bidens are hardy only in Zones 9 to 11, making them an annual in the majority of North America.

Danziger gears up for IPM ESSEN

Just a few months after their own “open days” event – the “Novemberfest”, held at the R&D facility in Israel, Danziger is getting ready for the IPM ESSEN show this month (Hall 2, Stand 2D40).

“After meeting with so many different companies from the industry, we can definitely say that expectations  continue  to rise in our industry. The need for better, new and unique varieties, together with an uncompromised demand for quality is growing from year to year” says Ori Danziger, Deputy CEO.

In the midst of season 2017-2018, Danziger will utilize their display to give focus on two of its “star” brands. This is the 2nd year AMORE™ Petunia is on the rise, with extraordinary increase of sales, year after year. “The AMORE™ series is a rare industry jewel, as it brings together a top- of- the- line breed of Petunia, answering all “functional” needs of the grower and end-consumer, together with the “extra” added value of an emotional story to go with it” says Ayala Zilberman, Sales Manager Europe.

After the success of last season’s promotional kit, with high demand for the AMORE™ branded pots, this season Danziger takes it to the next level, positioning it as the perfect gift for Mother’s Day, and any other special event.

“We understood the potential of this product in bringing incremental sales, as it can be used not only in the common way of personal use in one’s own garden, but rather to set as a love gesture for a loved one, who better than a mother. For this we created a full package of branding materials, to enable retailers to maximize the potential in this high consumption occasion” says Liat Kaplan, Global Marketing Manager.

The second “upcoming star” is the Bidens TIMELESS™ collection. “We see the high demand for Bidens, both for the best quality of the “known” varieties, from BLAZING GLORY™ to MEGA CHARM™, as well as for new and different Bidens varieties- such as the GOLDEN EMPIRE™, that can even be mistaken for a different crop due to its unique upright habit, or the WHITE DELIGHT™ and PRETTY IN PINK™, that allow different colors in Bidens” says Liat Kaplan.

This year, for the first time in many years, Danziger will also add a display of their cut flowers assortment. “We see high demand for our wide assortment worldwide. As the cut flowers industry is becoming more and more global, we receive so many requests from wholesalers, retailers, importers and of course- growers, for more information about sourcing our varieties for Europe. To answer this demand, we will have a display of our best sellers in this exhibition as well” says Anat Moshes, Vice President, Cut Flowers Sales.

In this section, visitors will be able to explore the Danziger assortment, from the best seller XLENCE™ Gyp, to the famous SCOOP™ Scabiosa collection.

Danziger to intrigue visitors at the Aalsmeer trade fair

Visitors who walked around the different booth and displays last week in Aalsmeer were surprised to see Danziger’s “SCOOP™” display.

No designed bouquets on high platforms “shouting out” their marvelous appearance were there. Actually, at first glance, the display looked almost empty, with only one large arrangement on the stand.

Instead, mysterious boxes were aligned in a row, inviting curious visitors to get closer and take a peek. Inside the boxes, laid an extraordinary arrangement, made by Astrid Van Der Berg using different colored plates for the SCOOP™ Scabiosa series, which is receiving much recognition in the market and is constantly on the rise.

“Having double appearances at once, one  at the IFTF and one in Aalsmeer, encouraged us to have some fun and take risks. We decided to be different, and use our Aalsmeer display to attract more attention, not by being “louder”, but rather by being “unique”” says Liat Kaplan, Global Marketing Manager.

Reactions were positive and enthusiastic with many passersby who could not resist the temptation to get closer and look down to “search” for the lost flowers of the display.

“We say “imagine more” and we mean it. We encourage each of our employees around the world, no matter what discipline they come from, to always try and “imagine more”, bring more value and progress to our company and industry” says Ori Danziger, Deputy CEO.

The SCOOP™ series continues to collect awards, after the winning of Blackberry SCOOP™  at the Glass Tulip in 2014, when it was just introduced – Candy SCOOP™ picked the 3rd prize at the Dutch Tulip award held by FloraHolland early November.

It all starts with the end consumers demanding more personalization. More options to fit their own personal needs and tastes” says Liat Kaplan, Global Marketing Manager, Danziger.

This year, Danziger chose to display its large assortment in a new way. Split into concepts by windows, a wide portfolio of Gyp, mums and fillers was exhibited, allowing visitors to find the best solution for their own needs. The 4th window was to show options of real-life uses, bouquets and arrangements with the new and best sellers varieties.
“We feel this need increasing from all parts of the value chain- from growers, through wholesalers and florists, all are much more open to expanding their assortment, offering a wider assortment for their customers”, says Ori Danziger, Deputy CEO.

One of the high focus series was the SCOOP™ collection, a series of 17 varieties, outstanding for its large heads, unique texture and wide color collection. “We feel the market’s tendency towards “cushion” style, with many petals and fluffy texture. Our vegetative breed of the Scabiosa, enabled us to bring a game-changing series with the crop, offering a creative and unordinary new flower, to fit this tendency”, says Danziger. One of the varieties in the series SOFT SCOOP™ a lavender cushion has one the 1st prize in the diversification segment at the competition held during the exhibition, showing once more the market acknowledge the uniqueness and the beauty of this amazing crop.

At Danziger’s display, one could also find many novelties; fresh from last month’s blooming for mums, with unique colors and textures.

Being the global leader of the Gyp market, Danziger used this exhibition to introduce its wide gyp assortment, with different sizes and colors, with the leading XLENCE™ large flower, to the “MY WHITE COSMIC™ known for its extra white flowers. For small flowers, Danziger introduced its very new varieties “MILLION STARS Ⅱ™” and “MILLION CLOUDS™”, as well as the MILLION DAISY™, also known as OPHELIA™, which has  unique “empty centered” flowers, resembling mini daisies.

“We take it up on ourselves to continue to “imagine more”, bringing new creative solutions to our industry, from top of the line breeding, to extraordinary marketing solutions, and this exhibition is always a very good opportunity to speak directly with so many factors in our industry, to share and to listen, in order to identify the industry’s future needs. No doubt, we are coming back home with a lot of homework”, says Kaplan.

In a rare move, Danziger has produced a “teaser” video invitation for the exhibition featuring the message, “Are you ready to share your love?” The short film, shot in Leiden, Holland, shows different people receiving a hand-delivered package of love containing an AMORE™ potted plant.

“While potted plants are usually bought by a person for his or her own use, we wanted to open a new selling opportunity by transforming the AMORE™ series into a gift,” says Anna Chernyavsky, Director of Sales – Bedding & Perennials.

To ensure no visitor to Flower Trials 2017 misses out on the AMORE™ “share the love” experience, Danziger has decorated the display to look and feel like Paris, with chanson background music, complementary macaroons and flowering pots.

With another exciting marketing initiative, 200 lucky visitors at Danziger’s Flower Trials 2017 expo will have the opportunity to “share their love” in an original piece of interactive marketing, inviting them to send their loved ones a box of AMORE™ with a personal greeting card.

In an additional marketing campaign entitled, “Share your love in the cities,” Danziger aims to extend the end-consumer base for its AMORE™ series by targeting organizational buyers such as parks and municipalities. For this new campaign, Danziger has teamed up with partner Florensis to plant the AMORE™ series in a variety of romantic locations in city parks. The first event was held at Vondell Park Amsterdam on 10 May and will be followed on 5 June with a special “share your love” event held in the park, featuring live music, special romantic activities and branded AMORE™ giveaways.

AMORE™ has its own dedicated webpage, http://danzigeronline.com/cmp/amore/, providing clients and customers with a centralized place to find everything they need regarding the brand, from product information to photos of AMORE™ events and a range of branded marketing materials.

BIDENS: RE-INVENTING A TRADITIONAL CATEGORY

Bidens is another crop that Danziger aims to reinvigorate through an imaginative marketing and branding approach. “Over time, the Bidens market has earned a perception as being traditional, almost boring, and dominated by yellow coloring and low innovation,” says Chernyavsky. After extensive breeding and crop development, Danziger is adding to its extensive Bidens collection, beginning with never-before-seen colors such as bright pink.

The entire assortment will be promoted through a marketing campaign called “TIMELESS™.” “This time our brand will not stand for a series, but rather for a crop, accompanied by a promise to bring the best of the known, together with a new, innovative generation that will be breaking the former rules of the category,” says Kaplan. “The name ‘Timeless’ expresses the idea of combining respect for the established and successful, with excitement for the new and innovative.”

Our GOLDEN EMPIRE™ in Tagawa gardens article

Consider a big show of yellow

Deborah, one of Tagawa Gardens Production Co-supervisors, is a big fan of a sassy yellow flower she found at the Hardy Boy trials.  Bidens “Golden Empire” will make an eye-popping statement in any container garden or hanging basket.

Masses of bright yellow flowers concentrate into a rich yellowish-orange in the center of each blossom.  Bidens are great little flowers that deserve more attention.  Maybe “Golden Empire” will win a whole new following.
